Amid the backdrop of Trump’s tariff agenda, the Irish government has committed to finally ratifying the CETA free trade deal. But legal questions linger over its built-in investor court.

The first weekend of February will be remembered as a chaotic one for Canada. US president Donald Trump announced his much-threatened 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian imports only to dial back and delay the charges for 30 days. Despite that reprieve, the European Union is likely the next target for Trump’s tariff agenda, a turn of events that could have a deep impact on Ireland. In the midst of this new tumultuous order, there is the growing trading relationship between Canada and the EU where Ireland’s Constitution is playing a role.
